Not So Reality TV Representational Critique Project

A satirical commentary highlighting how reality TV damages viewers’ body image and mental health focusing on leading shows Love is Blind, Too Hot to Handle, and Love Island. This 10:00 spot inspired by Last Week Tonight presents leading psychological and audience research to form a media critique.

I focused my research on “Segment 1: The Love Island Effect” and wrote a final script for this section. My teammates did the same for segments 2-3. We brainstormed so many hilarious skits to present the information and, in just three hours on a school night, we used a rented camera rig to shoot the 10 minute spot.

The set-up was complete with green screens, props, and many improv moments!

Context

To spice up our video wonderfully edited by Norah, I created segment intro cards and a custom thumbnail!

Crafting an Essay

While our video content was a group effort, my essay communicating our research was a solo assignment. In the document, I argue that these reality TV programs reaffirm the socially constructed norm of perfectionist appearances.
